Treatment Services

Comprehensive Evaluation (60 minutes)

For all new patients, we will start with a thorough assessment, reviewing your mental health history, including any prior treatment, as well as medical, family, and social history to gain context and better understand the issues that bring you into treatment. I will review medical records if provided and request contact information for any current providers. We will explore your goals and discuss treatment options including possible psychotherapy and/or medication treatment. I may also recommend laboratory testing or referral to other specialists for further evaluation.

-Consultation or second opinion services: In this case, following the evaluation, I will provide you and, if appropriate, your referring provider with treatment recommendations. Depending on the complexity of the presenting issues, we may schedule a follow up or two to complete the consultation.

Psychotherapy (45 minutes)

If we decide to begin psychotherapy treatment together, we will arrange to meet on a routine basis, typically weekly, or depending on our mutual agreement. As a therapist, I believe healing and growth come from uncovering new ways of understanding ourselves and how we relate to the world and that this occurs most effectively in the context of a safe and deeply authentic therapeutic relationship. I believe the goals of psychotherapy should include not only the reduction of troubling symptoms, but also the expansion of psychological capacities and resources, such as the capacity to have more fulfilling relationships, make more effective use of one’s abilities, maintain a healthy and balanced sense of self-esteem, understand oneself and others in more nuanced ways, and face life’s challenges with more flexibility and freedom. As an integrative therapist, I draw upon my diverse training in psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and mindfulness traditions as needed to provide individualized treatment to each patient. If medication is part of your treatment plan, we will check in regularly during our sessions to assess this aspect of your treatment.

Medication management (25 minutes)

I offer targeted medication consultation and management. My approach to medication treatment is conscientious and collaborative. My background in psychopharmacology has given me a nuanced understanding of the complex receptor binding profiles and pharmacokinetics of psychiatric medications and greatly enhanced my practice as a prescriber. I see all decisions regarding medication treatment as a joint effort, taking into account your individual priorities. I am careful to discuss potential benefits and side effects as well as how and when we may decide to change or discontinue medication. Medication management visits may also include brief therapy interventions or discussion of lifestyle factors that may be impacting your symptoms. I also have extensive experience with de-prescribing, which means the dose reduction or discontinuation of psychiatric medication that may be unnecessary or possibly doing more harm than good. If you are already in psychotherapy, I will collaborate with your therapist to provide the best care.

 FAQs

  • I am currently an in-network provider for patients with Cigna, Aetna, or Anthem Blue Cross insurance. If you have questions about cost or would like to verify coverage, feel free to contact me via email at info@johnhartmannmd.com. The cost of in network care varies based on the details of your insurance plan, including whether or not you have a high deductible health plan.

For those with other health insurance plans, I am considered an out-of-network provider. If your plan offers out-of-network reimbursement for psychiatric care, I can either provide you with a “superbill” or file a claim on your behalf so you are able to get reimbursed based on your out-of-network benefits. Please contact your insurer directly to learn what, if any, out-of-network mental health coverage your plan provides — it may reimburse more than you expect (for some tips on what to ask, see next FAQ). Please contact me via email at info@johnhartmannmd.com for information about my current out-of-network fees.

  • Typically, only PPO plans—and not HMO or EPO plans—may include out-of-network benefits. Tips to verify out-of-network mental health coverage:

    1. Call your insurance company. You can use the member services number on the back of your insurance card.

    2. Clarify your benefits, deductible, and how much you will be reimbursed. Ask your representative:

Does my plan include out-of-network benefits to see an outpatient psychiatrist?

Do I have an annual deductible for out-of-network mental health services?

If I have a deductible, what is the remaining amount I have to pay before I start to get reimbursed for out-of-pocket fees and when does it reset?

Do I need to obtain pre-authorization to see a psychiatrist?

    3. Clarify how much you will be reimbursed. Ask your representative:

What amount will my plan reimburse me for the service code 90792 with a psychiatrist? (Initial consultation)

What amount will my plan reimburse me for the service code 99214 +/- 90833 or 90836 with a psychiatrist? (Follow up: medication-focused or therapy-focused)

Please note that insurance will not reimburse for late cancellation/ missed appointment fees or for time spent on your care outside of appointments, such as completing paperwork, talking to other members of your care team, etc.

  • I work with older adolescents, ages 16 and up, and adults in all phases of life to address a wide range of concerns. I have extensive experience in the pharmacologic treatment of mood disorders (including bipolar disorder and treatment-resistant depression), anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma-related disorders, eating disorders, attention/concentration difficulties, psychotic disorders, insomnia, and substance abuse.

As a therapist, I specialize in the treatment of depression, anxiety, trauma-related issues, and substance abuse. I also welcome those seeking help with challenges where no diagnostic label neatly fits — relationship issues, burnout, career obstacles, major life and career transitions, or struggles related to meaning-making or sense of purpose. For certain issues, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, specific phobias, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, I have expertise in pharmacologic management of these conditions, but would likely refer to a specialist for targeted psychotherapy.

If you are seeking a psychiatrist specifically for a disability insurance claim or legal matter, consider contacting a Forensic Psychiatrist. Assessments performed on behalf of third parties introduce complex ethical issues into the treatment relationship and are not the focus of my practice.

  • Confidentiality is an important foundation for trust in mental health consultation. I adhere to strict ethical and legal guidelines regarding patient privacy and take steps to safeguard your information. This includes maintaining HIPAA-compliant electronic medical records and offering more secure communication methods such as an encrypted patient portal. While no method of digital security is foolproof, these industry-standard measures reduce the risk of unauthorized disclosure.

Face-to-face communication is preferred for clinical matters, while encrypted messages may be exchanged using the patient portal. You may also choose to communicate with me via unencrypted means (email/text), if that is your preference. However, please be aware that no sensitive information should be shared using these modes of communication, as they are less secure and readily subject to unauthorized interception by third-parties.

Please review my Notice of HIPAA Privacy Practices for more details.

  • Please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room. If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide, you may also call/text the 24-hour national crisis line: 988.

If you are a patient of mine, when it is safe to do so, please call or share my office number with the hospital staff to coordinate your care. I am not able to provide crisis services outside of regularly scheduled appointments and normal business hours. If you would like to check for the availability of same day appointments, please call my secure office line.

Please note that electronic or text messages are not appropriate for communicating urgent or emergent matters, as messages may not be received or reviewed in a timely manner.
